VKontakte Explained for Marketers — a guide from the smmtap blog

VKontakte is the default social network across Russia and much of the Russian-speaking world, and it is largely invisible to marketers outside it. That combination — large audience, little Western competition — is the entire argument for paying attention to it.

What it resembles

Structurally it is closer to Facebook around 2012 than to anything current: groups and public pages are the primary unit, the feed is chronological-ish rather than aggressively recommended, and the platform hosts music, video and files natively rather than linking out.

That last part matters more than it sounds. VK is a self-contained ecosystem, so content lives inside it rather than pointing somewhere else, and communities have a durability that feed-driven platforms lost years ago.

Groups are the platform

A VK public page or group reaches its members far more reliably than a Facebook page reaches its followers, because there is no equivalent of the reach collapse that happened on Meta's platforms after 2014.

The practical implication: member count on VK still means something close to what it appears to mean, which is not true on most platforms anymore.

Language is not optional

Russian-language content is the whole market. Posting in English to a VK audience performs roughly as well as posting in Russian to an American audience, which is to say not at all. This is the most common reason Western attempts at VK go nowhere.

Where buying fits

The same social proof logic as everywhere: a group at 40 members reads as abandoned and converts nobody, and vkontakte services fix that specific first impression. Because groups here genuinely reach their members, the gap between a purchased count and real activity shows up faster in engagement than it does on platforms where nobody expects reach anyway.

Keep it proportionate, and remember that a group's value on VK is the conversation in it. That is more true here than on the platforms where a page is mostly a billboard.
