Kwai: Short Video Outside TikTok's Reach

Kwai Explained for Creators — a guide from the smmtap blog

Kwai is a short video platform with a very large audience in Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico and parts of Latin America and Southeast Asia, and almost no presence in the markets where creators talk about strategy. That gap is the opportunity.

How it behaves

Mechanically it is close to TikTok: a recommendation feed, vertical video, ranking dominated by completion rate and re-watches. A creator who understands why TikTok promotes one video over another already understands Kwai.

What differs is competition. The same video quality that gets ignored on TikTok can get real distribution here, because there are far fewer creators fighting for the same slots.

Who it is actually for

Two groups. Creators targeting the markets where Kwai is large — and Brazil in particular, where it reaches an audience that overlaps less with TikTok than you would expect. And creators already producing short video who can repost at essentially zero marginal cost.

The second case is the easy one. If you are already making vertical video, posting it to Kwai costs you an upload and reaches a different audience. There is no strong argument against doing it.

The monetisation difference

Kwai has historically paid creators more aggressively than TikTok, in the markets it cares about, as a way of buying supply. Those programmes change frequently and vary by country, so treat any specific number you read as out of date — but the direction has been consistent.

On buying

The same cold start logic applies as on any recommendation platform: early engagement can push a video over the threshold where the feed tests it wider, and only if the video retains people once it gets there. Kwai services are a thinner market than the major platforms, which shows up as slower delivery and fewer quality tiers rather than as anything else.

If you are new to Kwai, the honest first move is uploading what already works elsewhere for a month and reading the results, before spending anything at all.
