Google Maps Reviews: What They Do for Local Search

Google Maps Reviews and Local Ranking — a guide from the smmtap blog

Local search results are ranked on three things: how close the business is to the searcher, how well it matches the query, and how prominent it is. Reviews are the largest input into the third, and the only one a business can move quickly.

This is also the one category on any panel where the honest advice differs from every other service, and it is worth being direct about why.

How reviews affect ranking

Three separate effects, which get conflated.

  • Count: more reviews raises prominence, and the effect keeps working well past the point people expect
  • Rating: the average shown in results, which drives clicks far more than it drives ranking
  • Recency and velocity: a steady flow of new reviews outperforms a burst followed by silence
  • Text: review content is matched against queries, so reviews mentioning a service you offer help you rank for it

That last one is under-appreciated. A plumber whose reviews mention emergency callout ranks better for emergency plumber than one whose reviews say great service, because the words are searchable.

Why velocity matters more than count

Forty reviews arriving in one week and nothing for a year reads as a campaign. Two a week for a year reads as a business that operates. Google's local systems are explicitly built to detect the first pattern, and businesses do get filtered for it.

So if you are going to influence this at all, the shape matters more than the number.

The line this category crosses

Buying followers is a vanity metric that misleads nobody about a material fact. A fake review is a statement about a real business's quality, presented as a customer's own experience, and read by somebody choosing whether to spend money on the basis of it.

That is a genuinely different thing, and it is worth saying plainly rather than pretending otherwise. It is against Google's policies, reviews do get removed in sweeps that take the ranking gain with them, and in several countries fake reviews are a consumer protection matter rather than a platform policy one.

What works better and costs less

Asking. The single biggest gap in most local businesses is that they never ask, and the conversion rate on a direct request at the right moment is far higher than anyone expects.

  • Ask in person at the moment the customer is happiest, not by email three days later
  • Send the direct review link, since every extra tap loses people
  • Reply to every review including the bad ones, which Google reads as an active listing
  • Never gate by rating — asking only happy customers is itself a policy violation

What we sell here, and what we would say about it

We carry google maps reviews because the catalog carries them, and the panel does not hide categories. But this is the one place where the advice above is not marketing copy: the mechanism that makes reviews valuable is that people believe them, and that is also what makes buying them a different decision from buying a follower count.
