A Telegram channel is one-way by design. Nobody can reply, which is the whole reason channels feel calm compared to groups. Comments exist only if you attach a discussion group, and a large share of channel owners never do.

How the mechanism works

You link a group to the channel. Every channel post then appears in that group as a thread, and a comments button shows under the post. Replies happen in the group; readers see them without leaving the channel.

It is a bolt-on rather than a native feature, which is why it behaves slightly oddly — members of the discussion group are a different list from channel subscribers, and someone can comment without subscribing.

What it changes

• Posts stop being a monologue, which changes how people read the whole channel
• A comment count is visible under each post, so an empty one is now something readers can see
• You get a feedback signal on a platform that otherwise offers only views and reactions
• You inherit moderation work, which is the real cost and the reason many channels skip it

The moderation trade

An unmoderated discussion group fills with spam faster than almost any other surface on the internet, because Telegram is where crypto and scam traffic lives. A channel that attaches a group and then abandons it looks worse than one that never attached anything.

If you turn it on, turn on the basics: restrict new members from posting links, enable slow mode, and remove anything promotional. Ten minutes of setup prevents most of it.

Whether it is worth it

For a news or signal channel, usually not — people came for the posts, and the comment section becomes noise the moderators pay for. For a community, a product, or anything where people have questions, it is the difference between an audience and a group of subscribers.

On bought comments

The narrow case is a channel where the comment section is visibly empty on every post and that emptiness is telling readers not to bother. Telegram comments can remove that specific impression.

The wider case does not exist. A comment section that is entirely purchased stays entirely purchased, because nobody has ever joined a conversation they could tell was manufactured. And on Telegram the tell is easy: commenters whose accounts have no photo, no username and no history are one tap away from being checked.
